Using images in your content, a quick tutorial

Malkazoid ·
Hello! So if you're like me, you're having a field day posting content right now since content drafting got added to the alpha. One of the best favors you can to do to your content is to add eye-catching images. It is insane, the degree to which this helps your content catch people's interest. Lets face it, in this day and age, the written word alone just does not cut it. If you're posting content without any images, I'm going to go ahead and say it - you're failing. The good news, this is...

Question about images on the posts

Emily Barnett ·
Hey is it just me, or is anyone else noticing their images disappearing from their posts that are queued up? Is there a size limit or something. I need to resolve this before we launch, because several of my images keep disappearing.

Placeholder thumbnails for adult content

Gaia Glee ·
When I got around to reading member feedback last night, I noted that several members were complaining about the adult image that appeared on the home page because it was not appropriate for such a thing to appear when trying to show Narrative off to colleagues or children. The response was that you can toggle 18+ content to be hidden in Settings. I would like to posit a different solution, as a concerned owner of Girls Gone Crypto, which will feature photos of female breasts. The entire...

Additional Image Functionality Within Posts

Banter ·
Hey Everyone! I'm glad to see the beta launch going so well. I had some thoughts about adding an image editor to the main post editor. The idea would be that when you select an image, not only would you have the ability to add a caption, and a hyperlink, you could click an 'editor' button that would bring up a more powerful yet simplified photo editor. The functionality that I was thinking would be: 1. Flip 2. Rotate 3. Crop 4. Resizing 5. Draw 6. Add Text within the image 7. Invert 8.

Allow user to define what portion of their image displays in the preview

Malkazoid ·
...or fit the image horizontally, so that wide aspect images display in their entirety. Doing either of these two things might be one of the lowest hanging fruits for improving the look of all Narrative content listings. Right now, most of the images in the content listings are unappealing because the brain can't easily grasp what is being looked at. Images are a double-edged sword because we are such visual creatures, they draw the eye first. If the result of that first engagement is ...

Images disappearing from posts

Malkazoid ·
Hello all... I seem to recall this having been an issue earlier on, but thought it had been resolved. I recently wrote the introductory post for the Synchronicity niche: https://www.narrative.org/post/the-synchronicity-niche The last image of the post - of cranes flying above water, appeared successfully in the post for several days. Today however, it was replaced with a very small icon I took to represent content that is no longer available (a sort of 'not found' icon). You'll probably find...

(This was originally a comment on a post about low-quality content, spammy niches, and unintentional voting circles . @David Dreezer kindly changed it to its own post so I could make it an official suggestion.) I will readily admit that, a few weeks ago, I stopped posting long form content (except for a few posts about Narrative itself) and started posting in the UVC niche you didn't fully redact in your post here. (Although the voting circle was something I intended to benefit...

AUP violations

Garden Gnome Publications ·
Make it clear in the AUP that violating another site's licensing agreement or terms of service is an AUP violation on Narrative. For instance, using a Shutterstock image without giving attribution implies the poster created that image, which is a violation of the Shutterstock licensing agreement . I'd also like to see standalone embeds (images, videos, music files, etc.), with or without proper attribution, be added as an AUP violation unless they were created by the poster and uploaded to...

Image caption changes when published

Vico Biscotti ·
When I put a caption on an image, it looks like exactly a caption, centered and small. Then I put a link, as you usually do (or should do) with attributions, and still the caption looks good in edit mode. But when I publish, the caption turns into an ugly link, normal text and on the left. See screenshots in edit and live mode.

Hi @Emily Barnett ! We aren't aware of any such issues. Can you provide a few more details about what's happening? How exactly is the issue manifesting itself? Are there broken images? Do you have any screenshots or error messages you can provide? If you could also provide the URL to the edit post page of a post having this issue, that would be helpful for us to look into specific posts to try to diagnose what's going on. Thanks!

Hi @Brian Lenz looks like a broken image. But I know i have uploaded via the insert tool, not trying to drag and drop. I have many that have failed after saving. I have re-uploaded but the break again. So i am wondering about file size.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, @Emily Barnett . We've been busy putting the finishing touches on the next release. Thanks for providing the details; it's all we needed to confirm the problem There is currently an issue isolated to images that have a space in the filename. This is an issue that is actually already fixed as part of the upcoming Certification & Onboarding release. For now, I would recommend you only upload files that do not have a space in the filename to avoid...

Hmmm. That obviously doesn't sound right, @Emily Barnett Would you mind posting another screenshot to show what you're seeing? Then we can try to replicate and determine if there is a fix. My main suggestion would be to try to backspace/delete/highlight the errant character to try to remove it, but I'm sure you've already tried most of those

Sure, here is a screen shot. So i deleted the broke n link and the caption that was with it, but as i deleted the caption this greater than symbol appeared. It wasn't in my caption. I cannot delete it not can i move my paragraph up to the top, it is like it is still occupying the space where the picture once was. I hope that helps.

Thanks, @Emily Barnett ! I'm afraid I don't have a quick answer for you on that one. It appears to be some quirk with the editor. We will have to look into the issue and get back to you...

Re: Question about images on the posts

Brian Lenz ·
There's one thing you can do to get rid of it to save you from having to create a whole new post. I will admit this is not at all intuitive, so we are looking into ways to improve it: Click up right before where the > is in what used to be the caption. Hit the delete key ( not backspace, but the forward-delete key). That should remove the > character. Even though you can't see the element there, repeat the process (starting with another click in step 1) to remove the rest of the space.

Re: Question about images on the posts

It won't let me do anything. I can click on the symbol itself but cannot delete it. I can click on the very top of the page but not where the image was. I can click where the text begins, but i can not delete the spaces above it.

Re: Question about images on the posts

Brian Lenz ·
It can work (I've done it with this exact scenario), but you have to be really careful about where you click. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the cursor doesn't appear when you click in the caption in this case, so it's very hard to see. If you're still having trouble with it, unfortunately the only option right now is to create a new post and delete the old one. Sorry I don't have a better answer! We have this logged for further investigation. It's definitely a strange case that...

Re: Content Type filters for all feed pages

Vico Biscotti ·
As now mentioned countless times, the unfair and unmanaged coexistence of different types of content is a major problem, and maybe the most important of the platform, in my opinion. Different types of content - with undifferentiated metrics and presentation - can only lead to unfair competition with easy-to-consume content prevailing. I already suggested three months ago different post types, coming with a length (number of pictures, minutes, ...) appropriate to the prevailing post type:...
