Using images in your content, a quick tutorial

Malkazoid ·
Hello! So if you're like me, you're having a field day posting content right now since content drafting got added to the alpha. One of the best favors you can to do to your content is to add eye-catching images. It is insane, the degree to which this helps your content catch people's interest. Lets face it, in this day and age, the written word alone just does not cut it. If you're posting content without any images, I'm going to go ahead and say it - you're failing. Also be aware -...

Placeholder thumbnails for adult content

Gaia Glee ·
When I got around to reading member feedback last night, I noted that several members were complaining about the adult image that appeared on the home page because it was not appropriate for such a thing to appear when trying to show Narrative off to colleagues or children. The response was that you can toggle 18+ content to be hidden in Settings. I would like to posit a different solution, as a concerned owner of Girls Gone Crypto, which will feature photos of female breasts. The entire...

Additional Image Functionality Within Posts

Banter ·
Hey Everyone! I'm glad to see the beta launch going so well. I had some thoughts about adding an image editor to the main post editor. The idea would be that when you select an image, not only would you have the ability to add a caption, and a hyperlink, you could click an 'editor' button that would bring up a more powerful yet simplified photo editor. The functionality that I was thinking would be: 1. Flip 2. Rotate 3. Crop 4. Resizing 5. Draw 6. Add Text within the image 7. Invert 8.

Allow user to define what portion of their image displays in the preview

Malkazoid ·
...or fit the image horizontally, so that wide aspect images display in their entirety. Doing either of these two things might be one of the lowest hanging fruits for improving the look of all Narrative content listings. Right now, most of the images in the content listings are unappealing because the brain can't easily grasp what is being looked at. Images are a double-edged sword because we are such visual creatures, they draw the eye first. If the result of that first engagement is ...

How can we optimize the message section in posts?

Hi, I was thinking about how to optimize the message section on narrative posts. What do you think of such as inserting images or gifs? also are posts in posts moderated?

Images disappearing from posts

Malkazoid ·
Hello all... I seem to recall this having been an issue earlier on, but thought it had been resolved. I recently wrote the introductory post for the Synchronicity niche: https://www.narrative.org/post/the-synchronicity-niche The last image of the post - of cranes flying above water, appeared successfully in the post for several days. Today however, it was replaced with a very small icon I took to represent content that is no longer available (a sort of 'not found' icon). You'll probably find...

Image caption changes when published

Vico Biscotti ·
When I put a caption on an image, it looks like exactly a caption, centered and small. Then I put a link, as you usually do (or should do) with attributions, and still the caption looks good in edit mode. But when I publish, the caption turns into an ugly link, normal text and on the left. See screenshots in edit and live mode.

(This was originally a comment on a post about low-quality content, spammy niches, and unintentional voting circles . @David Dreezer kindly changed it to its own post so I could make it an official suggestion.) I will readily admit that, a few weeks ago, I stopped posting long form content (except for a few posts about Narrative itself) and started posting in the UVC niche you didn't fully redact in your post here. (Although the voting circle was something I intended to benefit...

AUP violations

Garden Gnome Publications ·
Make it clear in the AUP that violating another site's licensing agreement or terms of service is an AUP violation on Narrative. For instance, using a Shutterstock image without giving attribution implies the poster created that image, which is a violation of the Shutterstock licensing agreement . I'd also like to see standalone embeds (images, videos, music files, etc.), with or without proper attribution, be added as an AUP violation unless they were created by the poster and uploaded to...

@Malkazoid - thanks for sharing. This is a great explanation. There are also many sources for public domain images. For example, images created directly by US government agencies are automatically placed in the public domain. The University of Pennsylvania Library has put together a great directory of government download sites, and other sources for free images: https://guides.library.upenn.e...475958&p=3255326 In the US, you can also use images after their copyrights have expired. Re: Using images in your content, a quick tutorial

Christina Gleason ·
I like using Wikimedia Commons to find images, especially since a high percentage of the images there are in the public domain: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page One of the problems I've been having with images requiring attribution are that many require specifically linking back to the original source, something I have been unable to do. I don't know if there's a way I just haven't figured it out, or if it's actually impossible to turn an image into a clickable link. I'm pretty...

Hey @Malkazoid , It looks like this may have happened to you again with: https://www.narrative.org/post/hodor-doorstop My suggestion is to leave this as is so the team can debug the issue...I don't believe a history is kept when you edit...so it's probably best not to blow away the evidence just yet. @Narrative / @Brian Lenz can someone look into this?

Re: Images disappearing from posts

Malkazoid ·
Thanks for the heads up @Banter ... The problem may be a little different this time. At least for me - that image displays when I am on the post itself. In listings, there is no image. Is it the same for you? I won't be posting any content until this is resolved... waste of energy - a post needs all the chances on its side to do well when it first hits the content stream.

Hey @Malkazoid , Sorry to hear you're having issues with images disappearing. We'll definitely work to fix the issue so you can post with confidence. I know how frustrated you must be It's definitely more challenging to troubleshoot when the post has been updated to fix the broken image, so I'm glad @Banter caught this one while it was still live. We are still gathering diagnostics to see if we can identify what happened. For this Hodor Doorstop post, I see the link to the broken image is:...

Hi @Colleen Ryer , I'm not seeing any other similar issues. Are you talking about the Discover page? What specific feed URL? (Note that I won't be able to see your personalized feed in Home.) Do you have URLs to any of the posts that have broken images? Everything I've looked at appears correct; the posts without thumbnails don't have any attachments, which is the expected behavior. Thanks

Re: Images disappearing from posts

Colleen Ryer ·
@Brian Lenz , oops, my bad, the posts besides @Malkazoid 's I'm pretty sure were intentionally posted without an image, so that's why there's no thumbnail for them - I don't see a little image icon on these posts, at any rate. Sorry for the false alarm.

@Malkazoid , digging for more details here Did you do anything with the image in the post after you uploaded it? Did you drag it/move it within the post? Did you cut it out of the post and then paste it back in? Anything else that you can think of / remember that you did with the image in the post while drafting / editing? Thanks!

Re: Images disappearing from posts

I wish I could remember with certainty but I can't... It is certainly possible that I accidentally cut out the image then pasted it back in: that has happened recently, just not sure if it happened with this post.

Re: Images disappearing from posts

OK, no worries! I think we've got a bead on the problem (and it probably is related to cutting the image and putting it back in). We'll make some improvements in this area to ensure that particular scenario will no longer cause issues!
