How to Discover Unique Niche Ideas

MichelleG ·
Some folks have been worrying about the best niches already being taken. This led me to think a little about how to come up unique, profitable niches. Here are my thoughts so far and some googled up links. It seems to me there are at least three objective indicators we can look at to come up with niches most likely to be profitable: Advertising Revenue Potential - For this one idea is to think about how expensive ads generally are for keywords and keyword combinations likely to be used in a...

The Official Community Site Gets a Facelift

MOLLY O ·
Today, the homepage for this Narrative Community site is getting a facelift. Sure, it’s only a couple months old but time for a refresh now that we have more than 1,000 members in the Community. The functions will be similar but the layout will be different. Here are some of the key changes you should notice: The new look and feel will be less “text” and more “tile/image” oriented. Instead of a simple list of Forum topics, you will chose the tile/image of the topic. Launching of the...

A need for a new topic category: Publishing

Emily Barnett ·
Hi @Brian Lenz @Ted I wonder if it might be wise on the community page to quickly add a new topic category of publishing since there will certainly be a flood of questions, and future readers might find the answers to their same question gets buried quickly. Just a thought.

Different types of appeal for niches

Vico Biscotti ·
When a niche is clearly ill-defined and the owner is not willing to collaborate, the only appeal available is to reject the niche, which may be excessive. I think more types of appeal should be available, for example: reject, fix name/description, inexistent moderation. Niches approved time ago may become ill-defined or lead to a bad niche balance with time and we need a process to fix that or the whole platform and community will suffer, especially for popular topics.

Hi Molly - I'm catching on to this late - but am really happy to see this. It goes a long way towards feeling forwards motion and keeping us engaged. I think it also holds value in allowing the general aesthetic of Narrative to mature through these early iterations. Case in point - I put up a thread for design observations , and it is this refresh that inspired that. Hopefully this will yield some insights for the @Narrative Network Team over the coming weeks.

Michelle what a great post! I think this will be helpful for years to come. In fact you may just want to expand and turn this into one of your first content posts when we go live. It could just be a continual earner.

Thanks for these reference tools. It makes me realize I probably underpaid for the Health Niche . I do wonder though if Advertisers are going to be more inclined to pursue advertising on the broader Niches like Health or if they will prefer something more specialized like "Diet". Or if they have in mind to advertise on both then how that will affect their spending habits. A lot of these revenue streams can be curtailed or enhanced significantly depending on the platform functionality.

I did use that as a basis to some of the niches I proposed, there are a lot of forums and communities out there for trends that last a long time that have potential niche generation. Whether advertisers will use keywords later and where they aim to utilize it regarding niche space is an area that will be worth considering in the future. Finding and implementing good search tools is an advantage of taking great niches and moving them to your advantage. Great post overall and best of luck to...

Thanks, @MichelleG , it definitely offers a fresh insight! With the niches that I already suggested and bought I usually choose the topics corresponding to my personal interests. Fortunately, I still have free spots for two niches so might as well try a different strategy this time... and see how it turns out

On other note, what works for me, when I try to come up with some unique idea for niche, is to read something interesting, article, interview,... anything which is not too specific, rather broad, and addresses some current issue. It usually leads me to reflect on that topic and also on related topics and so on until I find some idea/subject so interesting that I consider suggesting it as a niche Though I am not sure whether this generates ideas for the most profitable niches it sure combines...

Couldn't agree with you more! There are definitely people who have purchased niches for the potential, but I have a hunch they probably lack authority or passion for the niche. I find this to be a strange strategy as you become very dependent on your moderator and contributors for success.

Agreed Sona, and Emily. Also think of the human element - as owner of the niche, success will entail repeatedly reaching out to a large number of content producers who specialise in the field of the niche. How does one speak compellingly to these folks if one is not interested in and well versed in the topic? Why should they respect you and your niche if you don't share their interest in the content they produce? The answer is, they shouldn't. Once Narrative has gained momentum, this will be...

Concerning advertising, I am having doubts as to whether it will work the way folks seem to think it will. My impression was that network rewards (including revenue from advertising) are distributed based on niche activity levels. So if your niche has lots of people posting new content that is getting commented on and liked, you will get a bigger share of the network rewards than if your niche is not very active. I don't know that there will be any direct correlation between how much you...

Absolutely. Totally agree here. Particularly for right now (and possibly forever), the kind of reverse engineering I've been thinking about should serve, if anything, the role of putting words in front of your eyes that might remind you of an area of interest or expertise you have which you hadn't yet thought about in connection with niches. Fertility, which I'll write up soon here as a proposed niche, is a great example of this. I know all about the latest technology and research in this...

Malkazoid, Yeah this is a great, great topic. I'm assuming that how the ad placement and bidding software will operate is actually up for grabs right now (modulo white paper constraints). When I have a moment, I might peel this off into its own thread actually.

I am with you. My understanding is that the pool of advertising dollars is collective. Not what is advertised on your niche is yours. Generating activity on your niche is what is important. If you can't deliver the excitement and quality content for your niche there will be issues even if it is a popular topic.
