This is the fourth blog in our series that takes a deeper dive into the early Niches created in Narrative. In each of these, we are also addressing general Niche questions. In this one, there is a reminder on why Niche definitions are important and the process of editing a purchased Niche. Enjoy! Niche Deep Dive: Calling all Sports Fans!
Hey everyone- When we deploy our next major update (focused on KYC/Certification), we will also be increasing the maximum number of niche slots (niches you can own) per member from 5 to 10. Look for that sometime this month.
Perhaps these should be time boxed, and disappear after 9 months unsold - if there is interest again later, someone else can submit it (and hopefully buy it after it is approved). Having 170+ pages of unsold niches is a waste of space and effort - and it has been proven that duplicates occur due to nuances in descriptions and titles. Just a suggestion and it would clean up the listing making it easier for someone to find an approved niche to buy.
Some niches from the alpha period, approved in a different situation, now overlap with currently owned niches. Example: Creative Writing . Anybody can buy them anytime, but those niches are now a bad match, and would create difficult situations. The situation of niches evolves with time and keeping niches definitions that were approved in an obsolete situation makes no sense, in my opinion, especially niches coming from the alpha period, which was a totally different environment.
The Tribunal just approved the renaming of a niche from "Humor" to "funny" . Now, I'm confused more than ever. I have repeatedly been said even in the comments of the Tribunal - when the description changed the scope of the niche - that only the name carries the scope of the niche (and that alone is a source of endless discussions). Now, a change in the scope of the name - with no change of the description - has been unanimously approved. A quick surfing on the Web, for example, can let us...
Basically I have the niche Video Game Development, which used to be called GameDev (similar to Reddit). But that's bad for SEO, so I wanted to have better name. Someone had mistakenly I believe suggested Game Development and it was naturally rejected. Now question is, can I rename Video Game Development to Game Development? It's the uniquely approved niche.
Currently, I see not even the number of posts, on the niche page. It would be useful to have it, along with a few other metrics, like unique contributors. I know that even more statistics would be welcome, but a few metrics, to begin with, would be great.
Hi Molly! I just discovered that my niche https://alpha.narrative.org/n/personal-growth is not unique! I just updated my niche and now I realized, that it is a niche very similar whit my niche: https://alpha.narrative.org/n/personal-development . How can we solve this problem?
@Teddy . I see the issue. Why don't you appeal your niche with the comment above to the Tribunal. The Niche that is approved/purchased first always gets the nod. If yours came later, the niche will be rejected and you will get your payment refunded later.
Well I paid for the niche, I start working on details, but I am afraid, that the other niche was purchased earlier (?!) not sure. But I don´t receive any pieces of information in the past about this scond niche. Just I discover by myself.
Unfortunately, this has happened a handful of times - but not many so far. If it is in fact a dup (Tribunal will review), then you will get a refund. The tribunal will review the two niches in detail side by side. Since we are in alpha - we are still learning a bit here. It will be very easy to see these when the Niche Map is available.
Game Development is still in the system https://www.narrative.org/hq/a...al/31435596528935082 But rejected Niches names are supposed to be able to be re-used after 30 days. https://www.narrative.org/post...ll-features-and-more If I understand that properly the name is available to be used. I can't tell you whether or not the Tribunal would pass it, but I believe that the name should be available. Try it?
Hi @Vico Biscotti - yes, completely agree. I know that niche follower count is already on our radar for the future, but it might be good for others to list specific metrics they would like to see for niches.
Niche follower count and number of posts would be good . I'd also like to see top-earning creators by month. Currently, the top earners are a running total. I'd like to see who are the top contributors month by month.
I totally agree, not only because of the useless infinite list of niches, but also because the niche structure evolves with time, and old niches may be a bad fit with the current situation and - if bought - conflicts may arise. That's why I already suggested an expiry date on niches for sale here: https://community.narrative.or...e-on-niches-for-sale
Thanks. Seen that before. But I mean, Narrative should have proper list of all niches. 1- It helps SEO 2- I want one with pagination, and where I can see Niche name, live stats (e.g. posts/members...), and description to see which is interesting. Odd that we still don't have that.
I can't believe this niche name was approved. This was approved in May 2018. I'd like to think that, today, such a niche name would be rejected, but I have no confidence in the wisdom of the crowd. Limit niche names to 60 characters. This just looks ridiculous. It looks even more ridiculous at the top of a post when you're reading the post.
I laughed for a good minute when I saw that. I stopped being surprised by what can come out of the entire niche process, but I can still see the funny side. Totally agree on a length limit. And since the sick developer in me chooses among arbitrary numbers by powers of two, I see 64 as a good number. But, for the sake of clarity, I could even appreciate 32...
At first, I thought we were dealing with an absent niche owner. As it turns out, there was an appeal in April 2019 to change the title and description. It was approved unanimously, although @Ted said he preferred a shorter niche name. No kidding.
FYI- we'll probably be making this change (reducing max characters for Niche titles) as part of our big Publications release, since it fits in well with the work we are doing there. Thanks for the suggestion!
Will it be like an Ebay auction? Will the minimum bid for all Niches be $75? How long after suggesting a Niche will that Niche be ready to bid on? Will there be one large pool of Niches to start or will Niches constantly be rolled out? What will be the time limits for the auctions, 1 day, 2 days, etc?
This is Molly, the new COO at Narrative. I am about one week on the job and busy getting up to speed on everything. My head is like a ping-pong ball – lots of information to absorb. We are working quickly but thoughtfully on everything from hiring to policies to product. To me, the best news is that Narrative has already established a real community. I know this from reading the Community forum and the telegram site. One of my responsibilities is to oversee customer advocacy. Part of that...

I'm keen for niche owners to begin the process of mutually agreeing to establish relationships between niches in the niche web (niche architecture? what did it end up being called again?) That seems like it would be useful to be in place to assist populating a list of suggested niches for content, particularly after the first, and then (if applicable) second niche has been assigned by the content creator. Is there any word on when that will happen? I don't see that on the road map...
