As long as you are not violating anyone's copyright, you can post whatever you like. A great source for royalty-free images is https://www.unsplash.com
Question

Sourcing photos

blueeyes8960 ·
I was taught to always source photos to eliminate any doubt that you had the right to post that photo. Even if the source is from a public domain and says you don't need to give credit back, I always include the source (pixabay, pexels, upslash, ect.) If you post a pic with no source, that just muddies the water as to whose picture it is. I recently requested someone who posted in my niche of Flash Fiction to put a source on the picture. He informed me he didn't have to because it was a...

I'm surprised that Steemit is spoiled by bots still people don't forget to give attribution to all their pictures. Doesn't matter it's a free stock photo or their original one. I guess a compulsion of checkbox for such attribution can avoid the headache for everyone.

You'll see the following line in the AUP No plagiarism, trademark, or copyright infringements. Always give credit where it is due. That said, without seeing the image or post I have no idea if it is Creative Commons(CC) or not, and which CC license it was created and released under. Some require attribution, some not at all, in which case no credit would be due. Even were I to see the post I'd more than likely have no idea. If you believe that it is an AUP violation then please report it as...

@blueeyes8960 . This post provides the best explanation for how we are dealing with copyright issues and sourcing issues right now. As you know, we added the canonical links already and more tools will come in a future release. Each of these public domain sites for images (and content) have very different rules for how they should be used …and why it is difficult to manage. Content creators should be abiding by the rules of the free sites for sourcing. There are some well intended content...

I wasn't accusing anyone of plagiarism. The person I asked about providing a source told me it was a creative commons photo and I have no reason nor inclination to disbelieve him. This didn't really answer my question because I was simply wondering if there was a rule that all images should be sourced - either by saying the photo is "my own, or the "photo is from Pixabay, ect." That seems the most logical to me, then you don't have to worry about where the photo came from or if the user had...

@blueeyes8960 That's exactly what I've said in my previous comment. Sometimes we ask something else and gets something different. I feel, as far as we don't have any compulsion of mentioning such attributes on Narrative, only Niche Owners or anyone who like to put extra efforts for free have to bear with that to cross check on such details in posts. As Moderators will be not allowed for content cross checking and reporting (as it doesn't fall in their role by one of the earlier comment of...

@blueeyes8960 . Regarding sourcing, images should have attribution when it is required by the source to which they are coming. That is what is in the AUP. Right now, the Narrative platform doesn't have a built in requirement. Agree, it only takes a short minute to do this and it is the best practice - regardless of requirements.
Question

Top 10 Niches

Garden Gnome Publications ·
I'm wondering how the Top 10 Niches list is compiled after a quick review. The Mobile Photos niche, active for only two months, is listed as having 617 posts. Its Qualifying Posts for rewards is 428. That tells me there are a lot of low-quality posts in this niche. By contrast, the Speculative Fiction niche has been active since beta launch and has a total of 639 Qualifying Posts for rewards, and very few low-quality posts. Since Spec-Fic has 639 qualifying posts and Mobile Photos has 617...

Just curious - does the algorithm take into consideration views by non-members of Narrative? I drive some traffic from my social media to read my posts, but because they are not members of Narrative, they do not vote - I am just wondering based on @Garden Gnome Publications analysis of the Top 10 Niches, if the missing piece might be independent views? Just conjecture at this point...and also I am equally curious as to the answer to his question. Thanks!

The display is strictly number of posts, as the title implies. It is also very heavily cached and not updated frequently. It is entirely possible for the #11 Niche to have more posts than the #10 for a period of time, and not show up there. I don't recall exactly how often it is updated, but I think that I remember it being daily at a minimum.

Re: Top 10 Niches

Okay, that makes sense, @David Dreezer . If it's only once a day, I wonder if updating it more often as the site grows would make for a better presentation. Maybe twice a day, or every six hours. Also, and I believe this has been suggested elsewhere. Since we have the data on qualifying posts and total posts, why not report niches by highest quality rating? This would simply be a matter of taking the inputs, which you already have, and creating the output by coding the formula and adding the...

As a compromise in terms of dev time... maybe we could transform this ticket into an issue, and consider listing the top ten niches based on eligible posts? If spammier niches are benefitting from their spam because it helps them qualify for the top ten, they have an active incentive to not moderate their niche correctly. The moderators are the owners, right now. Removing a spammy post that doesn't belong in their niche drops their ranking in the current list! If there is an issue with...

Issue

Inconsistent pictures resizing

Vico Biscotti ·
I get inconsistent results when adding horizontal photos to posts. Some of them remain aligned with the left and right borders of the text, while others have some padding. Vertical photos seem all to have the same padding. This is especially annoying when multiple photos are there, and even more, for the first image, that should exploit the whole width, for more impact. Example here: https://www.narrative.org/post/apple-store-in-milan I took care of pasting plain text (from Windows notepad),...

Hi Vico, We've already had that reported thank you, but hopefully you can help us track down the issue. I think you said that you're on a Windows PC, not on mobile? Firefox, Chrome, or edge/IE? Which pictures are not full size but should be? They all look like nice pictures to me and some look as though they should be vertically oriented Which ones in specific are not correct?

Re: Inconsistent pictures resizing

I should have added more context, indeed, @David Dreezer . I'm using Chrome on Windows. You can't notice the issue with low window width, but enlarging the window, the margin around the picture appears. In the mentioned post , the first picture has left and right margins. The second and the third has not. Inspecting the HTML, I now see that maybe the problem can be in the image wrapper. The div and span that wrap the first image both force a width different than the other images. Reduced...

They all look fine on Android Brave, but only the cover(first and horizontal) image is shrunk in Desktop Mode. I see this image has a caption, the rest don't. All the vertical images are the same size and padding on the sides should be stronger because they are different dimensions from horizontal images.

Can Someone Explain This To Me?

Garden Gnome Publications ·
On Sept. 6, I posted a Labor Day Road Trip containing several smartphone photos of historic landmarks. I posted it to three niches (Photo Stories, Smartphone Photography, and Travel). It got 9 upvotes in 9 days. This morning, I posted one photo with one sentence of text and posted it to one niche (Mobile Photos). It's already got 11 upvotes, and one person thinks I have a beautiful dashboard (it's dirty as hell). Screenshots attached.

Mobile Photos is currently number 3 in the top-posted niches. It's easy to assume that it has a far bigger following. The small difference between Smartphone Photography and Mobile Photos is still a bit dubious. Almost all mobile phones are considered smartphones nowadays.

Possible, @Slaz , but Mobile Photos has 746 qualifying posts (August), while the other 3 niches have a total of 1015 qualifying posts, even if in part overlapping. I would consider the exposure (in the dubious assumption that the number of posts in the niches can be considered a metric of exposure) not significantly favorable to Mobile Photos. The key point here, in my opinion, is that while the first story is a full story that narrates an interesting trip, the second post is just a single...

As we've discussed elsewhere already too, the rewards system is giving way too much weight to quantity of posts over the quality of them too. Therefore, the niche owners make a bunch of duplicate low rep accounts, have those accounts post garbage all day, and then the niche owners get handsomely rewarded at the end of the month. This needs to be addressed. If you reward garbage, you'll get garbage. Garbage is the end of this platform. It really is that simple. Fix it. Please, fix it.

AUP violations

Garden Gnome Publications ·
Make it clear in the AUP that violating another site's licensing agreement or terms of service is an AUP violation on Narrative. For instance, using a Shutterstock image without giving attribution implies the poster created that image, which is a violation of the Shutterstock licensing agreement . I'd also like to see standalone embeds (images, videos, music files, etc.), with or without proper attribution, be added as an AUP violation unless they were created by the poster and uploaded to...
