Cerification and Niche Moderation

Colleen Ryer ·
It seems certification is needed to nominate ourselves for moderation - is this going to be changed, since it no longer required to moderate? TY!

Hi @Colleen Ryer , yep, that requirement will be lifted in the Beta release!

Moderator Nominations - how to find mine?

Serroc ·
In the early days, I admit I was very ambitious, and self-nominated on many of the niches in the 170+ pages of niches for "sale". I would like to remove myself from some of them (in case they are purchased and we get to the moderator stage of the platform) but alas, I cannot recall all of those that I was interested in moderating. And no, I didn't keep a list. I can see no way to do a search for where I might have nominated myself (or, gasp, if someone else nominated me) - so am I just...

I find the Activities scroll meaningless. It's not friendly at all. I'd like to be able to search my own activity for a post, a comment, or any of my actual activity. I think the Activities channel itself is a misnomer since comments don't get listed there. On the moderator search feature, yes, I should be able to see a list of niches I've been nominated for and, when elections are done, actually elected for. I presume this will ultimately land in Channels. Perhaps there should be a separate...

Issue with Moderators Election area

Emily Barnett ·
So happy we have this. But I see a pretty big problem arising. Almost nothing that is listed in the moderator election from page 5 onwards has nominees. I don't think this has to do with the quality of the niches, but rather people's lack of interest to scroll past 3 pages of anything. (i think search engines prove this). Given that they are listed first come, most of the Founders have moderators and will therefore collect payouts, and almost nobody from the patrons through to this summer's...

I second this. I read somewhere that the Team was going to implement something to remedy this, so hopefully we'll see an improvement in the next update. I think it makes sense for some aspect of this to favor the early adopters, but not so much at the exclusion of others. Not sure what the most fair balance is. Something that would help is to have, alongside the current list, a prompt to enter some interests, that will then surface some suggestions of niches to moderate. The focus should be...

Haha - me too... I think Narrative will probably be collecting a little bit of data on people's interests at sign up time, so this can be one of the first applications of that data - show them the niches they are interested in subscribing to, but also potentially becoming moderators of.

Good on you both for scrolling through. I got to page 11 and then needed to get some stuff done. Honestly i think for the short haul providing the option to see them all categorized alphabetically is the best bet. ( the members list on the community board has a similar feature to restructure how you view the list) In this way people can get to their interests quickly. And if they want to get to the Founders 1st position picks they can click right back to the way they are listed now. But i...

ok, an update to my original post. I just read in a recent blog post from @Ted that one of the new changes to the moderator elections is the following: "Because the system always tries to fill open moderator positions, we would no longer exclude niche owners who do not have moderators in place from being paid their “niche owner” network reward allocation". This is a massive improvement, at least for while the platform is growing. So it does make my initial concern, null in void with respects...

Moderators should be knowledgeable on one or more of the following topics: Libraries and Museums Literature Space Exploration The Lord of the Rings / J.R.R. Hi, Heidi! It's Verona. I hope the Narrative staff is okay with us moderating each other's niches because I was just reading about it and mine is gonna need one too. So far the ones I have are: How Stuff Works Math Mushrooms Software Development Looks like you've got some good ones too! I'd be okay with helping with moderating them. (And I was thinking the same thing. I hope they'll let us reject the posts that are gonna do nothing but keep the actual quality content from getting seen.)

You both have great niches! I am wondering about how you think moderating niches will be handled. I'm also stoked. I have two niches, VanLife and Portland. I just read this from founding member @Ted , "...I just wanted to let you (and others) know that we will have a "moderator center" in Narrative in the future where all available moderator openings will be listed so people can nominate themselves or others for specific openings prior to moderator elections." I think that answers my question. Have a great day!

Re: How many niches is one person allowed to moderate?

Holla ·
I would guess up to 5 as this is the maxmimum number of niches you are allowed to own. In a worst case you buy 5 niches and do not find any moderators. It would make sense then to allow moderation of the owned niches. Seems a little high. Apart from owned ones maybe 3 niches as a general rule would be a good restriction.

The Content-Moderation Time Gap

MichelleG ·
Hey everybody, So, I want to address a concern of mine that I've been mentally calling the "Content-Moderation Time Gap" (hereafter "the Mod Gap" for short). The Mod Gap is the several months between when it is projected content creators will be able to post content, tagging it for future moderation, and when it is projected moderator elections will take place subsequently allowing mods to perform their duties. December - Content Creator Uploading Mod Gap March - Moderator...

NICHE MODERATORS

MiguelIglesias ·
Hello. I have a niche of Dash and I have postulated myself to moderate it. I would like it to be someone else who performed that function and, as I understand it, should be the owner of the niche who nominates moderator candidates. Is that the process? If so, how can you name a moderator? Thanks for the response.

I removed a post from a niche by accident, then realised it actually probably did belong there

Malkazoid ·
EDIT - to be clear, as the niche owner, I removed someone else's content submitted to the niche... Can we make it so this decision is not permanent? I think this kind of thing will happen a lot as we get a feel for what belongs on our niches and what doesn't... I also hope that moderators will be able to reverse their decisions later... Every time a new moderator comes on board they will make a number of decisions they will eventually want to reverse, before they get into a groove.

Just a quick response for now: I'm 100% with you on the Reddit moderator aspect of things. I really hope we seize the opportunity to welcome such seasoned and motivated mods on Narrative before launch. It will fill our moderation slots but also provide a fantastic organic exposure to Narrative for the members of the channels they moderate on Reddit.

Re: The Content-Moderation Time Gap

As a reddit moderator, including for one subreddit that requires a college degree, I am curious about how much time and effort is expected for niche mods. I'm currently the most active mod on a relatively small subreddit, where I only need to respond to issues once or twice a week. In the Very Popular Subreddit I needed to have a degree for (I was invited to mod; I did not apply) there are literally hundreds of us "comment mods" who put in time if and when we have the capacity to do so...

Re: The Content-Moderation Time Gap

Malkazoid ·
Important question. Lets see what the response is. I'm guessing the full extent of that answer is very difficult to know at this stage. We don't know how quickly Narrative will grow, and that's naturally a big factor in what the work load will look like. It is possible that some aspects of mod duties may still be somewhat in flux. Another variable is how the number of mod slots will be determined. We bounced some good ideas about this around in another thread a few months ago. It is too late...

Re: I removed a post from a niche by accident, then realised it actually probably did belong there

Christina Gleason ·
It's especially difficult when the content drafting process DOES NOT show the description of available niches. You can only tell AFTER the fact if you click on the Publish button and the niche links become clickable. (If you even know enough about how Narrative works to do that.) We're making irrevocable decisions on a platform that is just shy of being one week old. Nothing we do should be a permanent decision right now.
