Google+ importer

Service: Narrative

Hello all,

Happy New Year!
Molly O asked me to send this suggestion to the support email address.
It is an importer to bring in Google + content.

One aspect would be bringing in entire community streams. Another would be
bringing in individual user's content.
One challenge would be designing a practical pipeline for who the content
belongs to once it is on Narrative, since a G+ community owner would be
deciding to bring the community over, but the community members would not
all follow, and in any event, would trickle in. I will leave such
considerations in your more capable hands.

All the best
Malcolm

Google has announce that on April 2, 2019, they will shut down Google+.  I don't see any way this could get into the development pipeline and implemented prior to that date.

In addition, there would be legal barriers to importing content from another platform without the permission of the original content creators and the platform operator.

The Google+ sunset doesn't spell an end to the possibility of importing: communities or individuals on G+ just need to export their content prior to the sunset.  They can then import that package into any platform that supports the format, at any time in the future.

In addition, there would be legal barriers to importing content from another platform without the permission of the original content creators and the platform operator.

I'm no expert, but I certainly expect the matter to be complicated.  When there is a will, there tends to be a way.  A community wanting to be reborn complete with as much content as possible could contact all its members and let them know of the porting - if they give their consent, their content will be ported, and if they don't, the new community won't have their content in it.  That's one solution.

The platform operator typically would have no say unless their terms of use give them copyright over materials posted there - I'm not aware of any platforms with such aggressive terms.

I assumed that the original proposal was to migrate content directly from Google+.  This would (probably) require permission from Google, and will be impossible once Google+ is shut down.

Of course, if someone chooses to EXPORT their own content from Google+, they could upload that here in some form.  There would still be an issue of copyright ownership if the Google+ content contained contributions from other users.
