Reminder to Follow Niches, and the less obvious reason why.

Service: Narrative

With only 18 days until Beta being launched, it is a good time to remind people to follow niches if you haven't already started too. Not just so you have more tailored content, but also to point out that once our moderator elections will be  held hopefully soon after the launch. As I understand the rules, only people whom are actually following the niche will vote for the moderators, not everyone on the platform. I see this similar to a municipal representative, or state election, where only those affected, within the geographical area, have a vote in that election.

I think this is a terrific implementation on Narrative's part. So it is a good idea to make sure you are clicking the follow button on the niches that you're interested in consuming content from, when it all goes live.

Excellent thought @Emily Barnett

I've followed many niches already but the moderator elections aspect had not occurred to me.  I think you may well be right in how it is going to be implemented, with only the niche's community of followers voting on in the moderator elections.

In terms of what we might expect as a delay between launch and moderator elections - my guess is that it might be a couple of months or more.  Not only will the team initially be prioritizing bug fixes for the functionality they are introducing, but they will then probably have to make tweaks to the reputation system, and allow enough time for people to build a meaningful reputation based on content before they feel that reputation is a helpful factor in people's voting decisions.

I guess we can only hope this won't take too long.  If it were me, and if there were no major interruptions to the accumulation of reputation data after launch, I'd say between 6 to 10 weeks would be long enough.

But then there is also the question of how much moderator functionality the Team needs to develop before the elections can happen.  Is it only the voting interface and mechanisms, or do they feel they should release, at the same time, a lot of the back end moderation tools that mods will use once they are elected?  In my mind, it makes sense for all of that to be in place before elections happen.  How long that takes isn't something we can easily guess at.

I cannot begin to estimate how long it will take, but what i do know is that the people whom have been following niches, voting for content within the niche, and actively commenting stand to make a lot more of an impression as an engaged person for the moderator role than someone who shows up at the last minute. I think it is a good idea to make sure you are following niches.

I do hope we don't have to wait too long for the moderator elections to happen. It is a very important part of the platform.
